It isn’t usual to read a B-107 to its subject, but I’m going to set you straight. “Insubordinate. Insolent. A trickster. Perhaps with criminal tendencies”.

More Super 8mm Film -Star Wars!

Filed under: Film — ben @ 6:09 pm

I’ve been collecting Star Wars related stuff for years. I have to admit that I stopped buying new items when the Phantom Menace came out as there was just too much junk going around.

This has to be the best thing I ever found. Five pounds from a flea market in Peacehaven.

My scanner is having some difficulty with over exposure but you can see the shots.

Oddball Books and First Editions

Filed under: Books — ben @ 7:59 pm

Here are a couple of good ones. “Before there was ARTOO DEETO, before SEE THREEPIO there was THX 1138″, I like the way Star Wars is in a bigger typeface than THX 1138. Warner Brothers scrabbling to get something back? :-

I’ve been hunting for the three original Han Solo books for years, not looking on eBay of course as that just spoils the fun. I’ve only ever found one :-

This is an odd Terry Pratchett “Book Proof” I found in Pele Mele. It’s in the American large paperback format with none of the “other books by” pages at either end :-

My small but growing shelf of Graham Greene BODLEY HEAD first editions, although http://www.booksellerworld.com says

“He is one of the most collectable literary authors with his early books being much sought after, later titles in jacket are not considered rare, though collecting the early firsts is a matter of great patience and expense.”

Notice how the experts wrongly spell collectible!

Super 8mm – Models and Effects

Filed under: Film — ben @ 4:10 pm

Way back in 1991 Martyn and I shot two reels of Super 8 film using models. One reel was indoors on a set I built in my bedroom, mostly trying to do stop motion. The second reel was shot on the dunes at Newton. I built a special camera mount, something like a golf club and remote shutter release so that the camera could be flown very close to the surface of the sand. The effect looked pretty good. We also tied a model into a puppeteers style rig with fishing line so that it could be “flown” over the sand and perform banks and dives.

As soon as I find a Super 8 projector I will cine transfer these onto Mini DV video and into Final Cut Pro.

Lambretta – Latest Progress

Filed under: Lambretta — ben @ 2:57 pm

I’ve had a go at making a clutch holding tool this afternoon. It’s come out pretty well but needs a clean up with the angle grinder, something I’m reluctant to do on a Sunday afternoon, even with our noisy neighbours.

Even if this tool works I’ve decided not to remove the clutch housing and will leave the gearbox alone this time.

I’ve put the new clutch plates in after soaking them in oil. Try to spot my first mistake!

Hmm that didn’t look quite right, then I worked out what I’d done wrong.

Also rebuilt the saddle of my Li yesterday in between watching the rugby and trying to unblock our kitchen drain. I started cleaning up the frame with a wire brush and noticed that several of the metal hooks were missing. It tried a couple of different things, copper wire and some curtain hooks but the best solution was to use old bicycle spokes cut to the right length and then bent with needle nose pliers.

A coat of spray Hammerite and a new seat cover and it looks a lot better.
