It isn’t usual to read a B-107 to its subject, but I’m going to set you straight. “Insubordinate. Insolent. A trickster. Perhaps with criminal tendencies”.

Vintage Castrol Oil Tin

Filed under: Lambretta — ben @ 4:29 pm

The resurrected Supertune shop announced in last months Scootering magazine that they were re-making some Castrol two stroke oil tins and an aluminium holder.

Just found this one on eBay which looks just as good, if not better with a bit of patina.

It’s from an auto-memorabilia dealer in Austria of all places. He appears to specialise in oil cans. Next step is to figure out how to mount it on the Li. I’ve seen other people bungy-ing them on but thats not very secure, it’s hate it if this twenty quid tin went walk about.

Lambretta GP Cutdown in France

Filed under: Lambretta — ben @ 10:02 am

Some pictures of my Lambretta GP cutdown which lives in France due to a lack of space in Brussels. I took it out for a spin to keep the engine turned over and the brothers-in-law followed me in the car to see if it really went as fast as I had been boasting. The speedo is in MPH and it got up to 70 (downhill) which is not bad and a bit scary in just a t-shirt!

Royal Tiger Mossel Scooter Club

Filed under: Lambretta — ben @ 1:19 pm

The “Royal Tiger Mossel Scooter Club” had it’s first ride out yesterday. It was my birthday so I asked for a few hours off paternal duties as a birthday present.

The rendezvous was at the Atomium in Heisel.

“Dop” had organised the event and had found a good route for the run around the countryside to the north of Brussels. He had also found some bikers to act as outriders and they did a great job of keeping everyone together and blocking the car traffic at junctions.

We stopped for a couple of fag breaks and then a beer at Grimbergen airport.

I met some really cool people including Jean Paul on his amazing Series 2 Lambretta.

Raiders of the Lost Ark, Scratch Built Model Truck

Filed under: Film — ben @ 10:33 am

Have you noticed the plethora of Indiana Jones merchandise around at the moment? I was in the supermarket and couldn’t quite believe my eyes when I saw a toy model of the truck from Raiders of the Lost Ark. I just had to buy one much to the amusement of my sister (“I suppose that’s for Douglas?”).

I scratch built my own version from two 1/35th scale kits when I was living in London in 1995. It was quite a surprise to see how much I got right. After watching that part of the film over and over I guessed they had based the movie truck on a GMC “Deuce and a Half” and then added a mocked up almost period Mercedes cab (remember this is almost pre-interweb when such knowledge had to be researched in real books and “making of” videos), heightening the cab roof to fit the earlier style.

Looking at this new toy version I see I was almost spot on. I used a Tamiya deuce and half kit for the chassis and then a Mercedes 3000 light truck kit for the cab and flat bed. I think my homebrew model actually looks better! Although it hasn’t fared well during the many house moves done since it was made.

Not complete without the Ark!

I even had enough material left over to scratch build the scout car which meets it’s end over the edge of the cliff. Adding a squad of Tamiya Afrika Corps infantry gave it the authentic look.

However Ian has pointed out that: -

But, I think – of all movies! – “Kelly’s Heroes” was more authentic in using Chevy civilian trucks in khaki which were virtually what the Nazis used! (The Opel ‘Blitz’ was the same truck made under licence – presumably much to the Fuhrer’s annoyance!)
